Berkley Power Station Interconnector

Sector: Power

Client: Babcock International

As part of the project Readypower was awarded a subcontract to design and build foundations for 26 number Transmission Towers.

Design Phase

The design brief called for a foundation solution that could be constructed without major impact to the SSSI grassland of the site. Readypower proposed a solution that could be delivered without the need for haulage roads, piling platforms, or major earthworks. Ground conditions dictated different types of piled solutions, all that could be installed within the brief of minimum impact.

Construction Phase

Foundations were constructed between July and September. Logistics planning was not only key to the programme but also to mitigate impact to the landscape and environment, therefore agricultural vehicles were used extensively, as were low pressure tracked machines. Despite numerous challenges thrown up by the relative close proximity of the River Severn, the contract was delivered on programme and on budget. As the foundations had been achieved with minimal impact to the environment, the tower erection also required an innovative method. For this, Babcock utilised a heli-lift to crane the sectionally built towers from a compound, direct onto the foundation.
