Jake Robinson-Bottom, Trainer/Assessor
This is a case study showcasing how one determined employee set out to reach his potential and earned himself a professional and respected position at Readypower.
Joining Readypower in July 2018 as a MEWP Operator was one of the best decisions of my career.
Within 2 years I was put forward to learn operating the excavator and excavator crane RRVs, then spent several years learning my trade as an all-round RRV operator, picking up a further 24 attachment competencies on the way.
I then started to be noticed as a valuable and reliable worker and was proud to be promoted to ‘Foreman Operator’, meaning I’d be there on site supervising the Readypower workforce and playing a significant part in blockade works, track renewals, and mid-week work.
Things really took off for me in September 2023 when Adam Lovewell, Readypower’s Group Head of Training, approached me and asked if I would like to be upskilled to a Trainer / Assessor. I jumped at the opportunity and for the next 6-12 months I embarked on a studying program to earn the qualifications that will be mine for life.
I achieved my Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement with City & Guilds on 4th January 2024.
Whilst waiting for the assessor course outcome, in November 2023 I began studying for the Level 3 Award in Education and Training. If I pass this, I’ll hold an accredited teaching qualification, something I never would have thought possible for me.
However, I did it, and in February 2024, I became a Qualified Trainer and Assessor holding the below certification.
- City & Guilds – Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement
- TQUK Level 3 Award in Education and Training (RQF)
Through dedication, hard work, and excellent mentorship from Adam Lovewell and Jon Pestell, I went on to get a first-time pass with the National Skills Academy for Rail (NSAR), and I’m now on the journey of helping new and upcoming people learn how to operate plant, and helping existing operators retain their competencies enabling them to work in this fantastic industry we call Rail.
